Shim Port
SSi’s Shim Port with Shim Stock allows for the collection of carbon needed for analysis of true carbon potential in a furnace.
The shim port is fitted with an extending rod with a probe at the end (see picture in Gallery Tab). The shim stock is wrapped around the surface of the probe, after which the probe is inserted into the furnace. Inside the furnace, carbon is absorbed by the shim stock. After a period of 10 to 65 minutes (depending on the furnace temperature), the probe with shim stock is removed from the furnace. The shim stock can then be analyzed to determine the saturation percentage of carbon. Generally, this analysis is based on a measurement of weight or on changes in the chemical properties of the shim stock.
See SSi’s technical paper “SHIM STOCK ANALYSIS” for more information on measuring the carbon content of the furnace atmosphere.
